New drivers will lose their licence if they use their mobile phones just once

As of 1st March 2017, the penalties for using a mobile whilst driving are doubled - you will receive a £200 fine and 6 points on your licence if you are caught.

New drivers are being warned they will lose their licence if they are caught using their mobile phones whilst driving. This will be one very costly mistake as they will have to apply and pay for a new provisional licence and pass both the theory and the practical parts of the test all over again.

All drivers caught using a handheld mobile device behind the wheel will be punished whether they are making a call, texting, using loudspeaker, filming, taking a picture or using the internet. The penalties also apply when sitting in stationary traffic.

The only exception is in an emergency where the driver is permitted to call 999 or 112 if it is unsafe to stop.

Nick LLoyd, road safety manager for The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), said they hoped the new stricter penalties will mean "drivers think twice"

"Taking your theory and practical driving tests can be an expensive and stressful time, so imagine having to go through it all again for one moment of stupidity"

While the use of a hands-free kit is legal, RoSPA advises that not even this should be attempted whilst driving.

"Although you won’t be taking your eyes off the road, merely engaging in a conversation will mean that your attention is elsewhere and not fully on the road and the environment around you, and if your driving is affected you could be charged with “not being in proper control of your vehicle”."
